I try to write some helpful info on Fridays, so sorry we are a day late. We have some exciting things going on behind the scenes that’s kept me busy as we prepare for the season which is now just one week away!
We had an Instagram post earlier this week about mulch jobs and bed edging. Concrete curbing, metal edging, plastic borders, pavers or masonry, etc. can all help you maintain the edge to your shrub beds. Those all have their various pros and cons starting with pricing. At the end of the day, it comes down to personal taste for what you want in your landscape.
The most cost effective edging and my particular favorite is just a natural grass border. My landscape designs tend to fall toward natural materials and components in the landscape. If your putting in new mulch to enhance your beds and curb appeal, that is the best time to redefine those edges, although it can be done at any time. Most edges need to be redefined around once a year to keep them looking crisp and really set apart the grass vs. shrub bed, as erosion and grass growth tend to fill in the edges throughout the year. Once established, proper weekly edging from your lawn maintenance keeps it looking good for the season.
Back to our post, spreading the mulch is the easiest part of most mulch jobs. The prep work such as weeding and edging is what sets your yard apart but unfortunately takes the most effort. If you are laying new mulch and want that professional look to your beds, take the extra time and effort to get it done right. If your landscaper isn’t doing this or telling you this info…you need another landscaper! There are all kinds of fancy tools on the market for this but we often rely on just a flat blade shovel. We also use the simplest of tools to round your tree circles back out after the past year has turned them into tree eggs or footballs!
If you are replenishing your mulch, I hope these tips help you get the look you desire. If you have any questions or need any assistance with the work, feel free to reach out to Bikini Groundskeeping. Next week I will discuss the various types of mulch and what we have found to be the best option for our direct area and why. Warmer weather and green grass is on the horizon and we are ramping up for a busy year!
Im not 100 on this, but I do like the concept. High-quality read here
