Fall/Winter Schedule Updates:

Schedule Updates

December 16th - December 20th

Thursday:

As indicated below, we are one day behind schedule due to rain and wet conditions this week.

Due to the rain on Monday evening and wet conditions on Tuesday, all remaining services for the week will be delayed one day.  Please turn irrigation off for the remainder of the week as rain provided all the irrigation you should need this week.

What Is My Grass Doing!?

Our grass has shifted to winter mode. If you are new to Florida, southern grasses like heat! When our soil temperatures drop below the 80's, the new growth slows down, the grass thins out, and at times it will turn yellowish-brown due to frosts. This is a completely normal cycle for southern grass. Some zones more north have fully dormant grass that stays yellow or brown the entire winter. In our zone, our grass doesn't go fully dormant due to the fluctuating FL temperatures but you are not going to see the emerald green color and fast, thick growth we get in the winter. You cannot water your lawn out of dormancy and adding fertilizer can stress it out when nature tells it to rest but you are telling it to grow. Let nature take its course and we will be back to growing 4+ inches per week before you know it. You can expect these conditions until mid to late March and into early April.

Our crews are currently mowing Saint Augustine lawns near their normal heights of around 4", however, the grass will recede due to the cold temperatures. As we move closer to March we will begin shortening Bermuda down to lower heights to prepare for the spring growth.

Irrigation...How should I be watering in Spring?

Now that we are transitioning to "thunderstorm season" (later than usual), irrigation needs to be monitored and dialed back or even set to OFF. We are being challenged often with irrigation running on service days making our job more difficult than it already is and creating poor results for your cut. With nearly daily rain, the ground becomes saturated so irrigation on top of that just creates runoff and mushy ground. This is also a waste of resources and money for the homeowner. My rule of thumb is 3 completely dry, hot days before I even consider running irrigation this time of year while checking the upcoming forecast as well. You would be surprised how little your irrigation is needed following those guidelines once the daily storms start in NE Florida.

If you have a new construction lawn, this does not fully apply to you. Your lawn still needs water regularly to drive deep root growth as your lawn establishes. You will want to keep the frequency at three soakings per week. When you begin to see runoff from your zones, that is how much time your zone needs and they are all different.
