From Hobby To Family Business
With family roots from St. Augustine, my family began relocating here in 2015 after being born and raised in the once rural suburbs of Atlanta. With Florida and St. Augustine in my blood, our family of four moved here in 2019 after all the benefits of this beautiful city grew on us beyond just a retirement dream. We have been so delighted to call this place home and adapt to the Florida lifestyle!
Looking back to my youth, one of the first summer “cash” jobs I ever did was laying sod for a local small nursery/landscape company. I have always had a talent and passion for landscape projects, horticulture, and making yards beautiful! For what may be boring to some, I have always educated myself in the field as well as learning an entire new plant hardiness zone after our move to Florida. It’s been great learning how to care for tropical trees and shrubs that I have not had the opportunity to enjoy in the past.
Fast forward to the present and I have just completed 20 years as a residential and commercial property adjuster with a single company while gardening and landscape was just a hobby and household chore. From what started as a hobby with my own yard and a couple neighbors (and maybe for a little beer money) to provide a much more beautiful yard than the typical lawn maintenance companies were capable of, this hobby grew! Initial plans for the business were almost a joke and silly ideas for a side hustle before I discovered there was a huge need in this fast growing area for hard work and quality service at fair pricing. It turns out that hard work, consistency, and quality service isn’t always easy to come by around here. Just about anyone can ride a lawn mower, but to take the extra time, taking pride in your work, and doing a job right the first time seems to be a thing of the past.
Here we are today…from the boredom of 2020 and the entire covid mess, I wasn’t going to just sit around wasting so much valuable time. Under very controlled growth through the summer of 2020, I turned away as much business as I accepted to test the waters and take my time before deciding to leave a lucrative 20 year career. It’s a tough decision when you have been doing anything that long, but the passion faded, and the demands and stress of corporate micro-management takes it’s toll. Doing an outstanding job on someone’s lawn that they never have to worry about is far more gratifying than settling a $30,000 property loss and I can sleep at night without a long list of tasks that did not get completed!
Reflecting on my experience as an adjuster with a Fortune 500 company, I use the business knowledge and quality standards demanded throughout my tenure with the company to instill in the business model for Bikini Groundskeeping. We are truly a family operated business and don’t be surprised if you see my wife or two sons on your property putting in some of the work!
