Nominations For Charitable Lawn Service For Those In Need
What Is My Grass Doing!?
Grass is waking up with soil temperatures rising. Lawns will begin burning energy and growing at a much faster rate as the soil temperatures rise. We are seeing widespread cold/frost damage from the dry, cold winter and are watching to see how much the affected areas recover. It appears that areas susceptible to wind on top of the frost have the most severe damage. All we can do is wait and see how the root systems survived under that dormant blanket. For areas that do not recover, feel free to reach out for a replacement quote.
Our crews are currently mowing Saint Augustine lawns near their normal heights of around 4"+. Bermuda and Zoysia lawns are being cut between 2" and 3" as they like to be short as possible.

Irrigation...How should I be watering in Spring?
Now that we are transitioning to "thunderstorm season" (later than usual), irrigation needs to be monitored and dialed back or even set to OFF. We are being challenged often with irrigation running on service days making our job more difficult than it already is and creating poor results for your cut. With nearly daily rain, the ground becomes saturated so irrigation on top of that just creates runoff and mushy ground. This is also a waste of resources and money for the homeowner. My rule of thumb is 3 completely dry, hot days before I even consider running irrigation this time of year while checking the upcoming forecast as well. You would be surprised how little your irrigation is needed following those guidelines once the daily storms start in NE Florida.
If you have a new construction lawn, this does not fully apply to you. Your lawn still needs water regularly to drive deep root growth as your lawn establishes. You will want to keep the frequency at three soakings per week. When you begin to see runoff from your zones, that is how much time your zone needs and they are all different.
